Ryan Gainey was one of the most celebrated American garden designers of the past three decades. Growing up in rural South Carolina, Ryan developed a love of plants from relatives and mentors at an early age. After moving to Atlanta in the 1970s, Ryan began designing stunning gardens in affluent neighborhoods in the city and around the world.

The Well-Placed Weed is a documentary of the life of Ryan Gainey as told by Ryan and his friends. He was a contradictory character, offensive and tender, self- absorbed and generous, artificial yet truly authentic. Ryan was known for his love of beauty and the ability to create it. His personal “garden of remembrance” in Decatur, Georgia was his masterpiece where friends and family live on through the overlapping blooms of heirloom plants.

“This documentary is superb. It brought back some good memories of my several visits with Ryan—an interesting character for sure! The gardening world will miss this wonderful and talented man.”

—Vince Dooley, author of The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach

“The movie is punctuated with dreamy footage of Gainey’s botanical bounty, spilling over with flowering plants.”
